Aachen hat sich ein ambitioniertes Ziel gesetzt: Klimaneutralität bis 2030 und die Steigerung der Lebensqualität ihrer Bürgerinnen und Bürger. Ein wichtiges Anliegen dabei ist die Reduzierung der Verkehrsemissionen.

Um dieses Ziel zu erreichen, führt die Stadtverwaltung verschiedene Verkehrsmaßnahmen durch und engagiert sich für deren Erfolg. Um die Wirksamkeit bereits umgesetzter und zukünftiger Maßnahmen handfest sicherzustellen und das Vertrauen der Bürgerinnen und Bürger in diese Maßnahmen zu stärken, ist es wichtig, diese datengetrieben zu stützen und sie bei Bedarf zu optimieren. Wie kann künstliche Intelligenz (KI) die Stadt Aachen dabei unterstützen, den Erfolg der Verkehrsmaßnahmen in Echtzeit zu messen, verbessern und transparent zu kommunizieren?  

The Smart City Meter is much more than a technical tool - it is the key to a new era of urban transportation planning. It transforms abstract data into tangible insights that flow directly into improving the quality of life. The system records and analyzes traffic in real time and makes CO₂ emissions measurable, visible and controllable.

- AI-supported and visionary: With so-called Vision AI, AI can analyze traffic flows directly on site, recognizes patterns and provides valuable insights.

- Data security guaranteed: Thanks to GDPR-compliant processing, citizens' privacy and security are protected at all times.

The city can evaluate its measures in real time and adapt them if necessary. Citizens also have access to information that is relevant to them.

• Independent performance measurement: Trust is created through transparency. The effectiveness of the measures is evaluated objectively and independently - which enables trust to be built up directly.

• Real-time analysis: Recognize problems before they arise. Through continuous analysis, the system recognizes the effects of measures the effects of measures and provides recommendations for action at the touch of a button.

• Traffic counting and typing: The technology counts and categorizes road users such as bicycles, cars and motorcycles by vehicle type, enabling precise traffic data to be obtained.

• Data protection compliant: Small special computers (Edge) are connected to traffic cameras, which do not upload or permanently store the images. Instead, the images are analyzed offline on site on the edge computer with AI (Vision AI) and deleted directly.

• Trend analysis and forecasts: long-term developments are identified at an early stage so that the city is always one step ahead.

• Estimation of CO₂emissions: Based on the recorded vehicle types and movement data, CO₂ emissions are estimated in order to assess the actual environmental impact of the measures.

• Citizen participation and communication: dashboards with relevant real-time data inform the public and make progress visible - a quantum leap in citizen communication. Aacheners are motivated to participate in shaping the future together.

• Mood analysis (optional): The stress level of road users can be recorded anonymously on the basis of movement patterns. An insight into the emotional acceptance of the measures.

With the Smart City Meter, we are jointly paving the way to "climate-neutral Aachen 2030" - in a smart, well-founded and future-oriented way. The system is more than just a technical achievement: it creates trust in the city, increases citizen participation and supports the city administration in successfully implementing the climate targets. Aachen is thus setting new standards that will radiate far beyond the city limits.
