Optik Moeres designs work processes in line with the circular economy

Optik MOERES  has also received a grant from the EcoFonds for its "process water treatment" project. The company is one of the few businesses in Aachen that grinds its customers' lenses itself. For the production and processing of their lenses, the fresh water connection was previously used for cooling during the grinding of the lenses and for removing grinding residues. This process consumes eight liters of fresh water - per lens! In addition, more than 200,000 kg of microplastics and grinding residues are found in the water every year, which can only be filtered out of the water cycle in small quantities from . MOERES wanted to change this and applied for the grant from the fund in February 2023.

The funding enabled an efficient circulation and filter system to be integrated. This reduces water consumption from the previous 400,000 liters to 90 liters per year. The optician can thus save 99.8% of the original water consumption. With this filter system, microplastics no longer end up in the waste water. Any grinding residue is collected during the annual maintenance of the device and processed for reuse in the construction industry . Thanks to the City of Aachen's fund, Optik MOERES has succeeded in changing the core process of its production and thus operating more sustainably and efficiently.
