Aachen's city center, but safe!
Drunks accost you, beggars aggressively ask you to make a donation, or sneak thieves steal from you: Some citizens have already had bad experiences, others lack the confidence to stroll through the city center alone or in a small group, especially in dark hours, without bias. This is where our competition entry comes in: Using Adalbertstrasse as an example, we demonstrate a pentagon of innovative solutions to significantly increase people's perceived and real safety.
We would like to use lampposts that come into question in order to, with the help of video cameras and edge computing
- nip noise pollution in the bud,
- increase the luminosity of lampposts where people are,
- provide an emergency call app that enables highly accurate location tracking,
- reduce crime through the use of video, and
- keep unauthorized traffic out of the pedestrian zone via video evidence.
For this purpose, Meys ESC, a company that is very active regionally in the security sector, is cooperating with the start-up Smart City Factory, an expert in edge computing solutions. For more than 25 years, Meys ESC has been offering security solutions for industry, commerce and public institutions. Most recently, the company equipped not only Peterstraße but also Kaiserplatz with video technology on behalf of the Aachen police. Adalbertstraße, as the central pedestrian zone, connects both already existing video technology deployment sites.
In this paper, we propose the deployment of four cameras, four volume sensors and three noise pattern sensors. The volume sensors can give a message to a defined device when the specified volume value is exceeded. Noise pattern sensors detect aggressive behavior patterns as well as glass breakage and also transmit this in real time to a defined facility such as the public order office.
The intelligent lighting system provides higher luminosity when motion is detected. As a result, citizens feel safe on the street, and energy can be saved along the way. Every light in the defined area will be equipped with this sensor technology.
The emergency call app has the advantage of sending beacons that can determine the exact location of the person in distress. These are small battery-powered transmitters that can communicate with receivers located in the transmission area, such as smartphones or tablets, based on Bluetooth Low Energy technology. Two possible solutions are available for authentication and registration.
The advantages of edge computing are scalability and modular installation, absolute compliance with data protection, and an open system that is vendor-independent. Plug&Play enables easy handling, and the portal is extremely user-friendly.
So we are addressing five problems with one overall solution, using one infrastructure. It is a networked solution that can be flexibly changed and expanded.
In the "Focus Year Adalbertstrasse" proclaimed by the administration and politicians, it is only logical to increase the quality of stay for citizens in Adalbertstrasse not only with soft location factors, but also with hard safety factors. A livable city center creates a protected environment in which people feel comfortable. This competition entry makes a decisive contribution.
